Nikon Z5

The whispers about Nikon producing a mirrorless full-frame camera at an entry-level price are growing louder. So much louder that the new camera, which will be the latest addition to their Z series, has already been given a name: the Nikon Z5.

The Z5 is likely to be a "lite" version of the current Z6, so we might see a shift from the Z6's XQD card to a SD card slot. With the cost of XQD cards and the extensive use of SD cards, it seems likely this will happen.

The all-important sensor is something else to keep an eye on. There are some suggestions the Z5 will include the same high-quality sensor as the Z6. However, with the cost-cutting required to bring the Z5 to market at an affordable price, some in the camera industry are wondering if the sensor from the D750 might be used instead. This will obviously keep the Z6 at another level from the new Z5, which is an important selling point, but the thought of the two stablemates sharing the same sensor is an enticing one.

Lenses are another important component of course, and the feeling is that non-premium Z lenses will be used to keep the Z5 at an entry level price. While non-premium lenses on a Nikon camera still promise to deliver excellent results, they may lack top-end features such as weather sealing. An announcement on the Z5 is imminent, so all rumours and speculation will soon be replaced by concrete details. We'll keep you posted!

Nikon Z5 review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Nikon Z5 review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

The Nikon Z5 is the best entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera you can buy right now. It’s not perfect, but thanks to a blend of great image quality, a reliable autofocus performance, accessible handling and a weather-sealed body and tough body, the Z5 has a lot going for it.

Comfy grip and solid build; Logical control layout; High-resolution EVF; 5-axis AF system; Very capable AF system

Underwhelming burst shooting speed; Disappointing video specs including cropped 4K; Tilt-angle display; not vari-angle

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

The Z5 is a very good entry-level full frame camera, but its relatively high launch price may just persuade some potential purchasers that it’s worth forking out the relatively little extra for the Z6. Compared to other brands, the Z5 is neither cheap nor expensive.

Solid; robust feeling build; Good EVF and tilting rear screen; Twin memory card slots

Only 4.5fps continuous shooting; 4K video is cropped; 24-50mm kit lens is limiting; Nikon Z6 is better value

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

The New Nikon Z5 is a very attractive option for photographers on a budget who are looking for a full-frame camera. And in combination with one of Nikon's compact and affordable lenses like the 24-50mm f/4-6.3, it makes for a very compact package that delivers big-camera results.

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera with 24-50mm Lens VOK040ZA review

Despite its struggles with dim, warm light, the occasional focusing discrepancy and the 4K videos ordeal, the Nikon Z5 is wholeheartedly recommendable. It is a good camera, and at an introductory price of Rs 1,13,995 for just the body, the Z5 makes sense as a second unit for casual photography, for...
